Dinner setting

Dear friends,

Following our previous update about the launch of Tamar in Australia with the first Melbourne gathering, we are thrilled to update on the first Tamar event that took place in Sydney. Please find below an update from Avishai Conyer who is leading, among other things, the Tamar initiative in Sydney. ARZA is working in collaboration with other leading organisations to support and promote this great initiative to engage with our younger generations.

ARZA Shabbat Dinner

There is a common narrative within the Jewish community that after experiencing a vibrant Jewish upbringing, young Jews tend to drift away from their Judaism until they form families of their own. However, it is not that Jewish young adults do not want to engage in Jewish life. Rather, an innovative approach to programming is required to build supportive and meaningful spaces where younger Jews can find communal connection.

Recognizing this need, Emanuel Synagogue is working to form a new ‘Tamar’ group in Sydney. Tamar is a global platform for engaging Progressive Jewish young adults looking to build and strengthen Jewish connections and communities. At Emanuel, Tamar is pursuing opportunities to engage in social, cultural, spiritual and educational programming so there is a place for all who want to engage.

The launch of Tamar took place last Friday night with a vibrant Shabbat dinner, where thirty individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 gathered at Emanuel Synagogue following its Kol Nefesh service with Netzer. The dinner proved to be a resounding success, offering everyone the chance to meet new people and foster connections within the community.

Looking ahead, we have exciting events planned, including a young adults Pesach seder on April 23rd and a relaxed evening featuring a bonfire to celebrate Lag Baomer on May 25th. If you are interested in connecting with Tamar, please fill out this form and I will be in touch: emanuelsynagoguesydney.shulcloud.com/form/tamar_sydney

I am so grateful for the support of my amazing community, and look forward to all the fantastic work we will continue to do to engage and enrich the lives of young Jewish adults in Sydney.
